Myanmar - Land of Golden Pagodas

Myanmar is the present name for the country that was known as Burma. Its early civilizations built thousands of pagodas and temples after adopting Buddhism in the 4th century. Many are still in existence today in conditions ranging from decay to glittering with gold leaf. It was a British colony from the late 19th century but gained independence after WW II. The decades since have been a succession of military coups with brief periods of democracy. Its amazing sights have  been open to Americans in recent years following the lifting of sanctions against the military junta in 2011. Join us as we travel through this fascinating country. Visit Yangon (Rangoon), Bagan, Mandalay, the Shan State and Inle Lake. Learn about Myanmar's history, religion, politics and welcoming people.

This presentation differs significantly from the "old family style slide show" of the past. Using modern digital technology, it includes multiple soundtracks for narration and local background music, pan and zoom effects ala "Ken Burns" (Jazz, Baseball, The Civil War...on PBS), movie clips and animation. It is a truly multi-media show.

We will introduce the program with a discussion of background information and follow it with a question and answer period. The program includes a brief review of the history of the area. Significant currents events may be included in the discussion. Our large size photographic prints of scenes from the show will be displayed and discussed.  The formal show runs about 35 minutes and the total presentation from 60-90 minutes.
